How We Support an Emergency Kitchen in Ukraine
As previously reported on several occasions, our association supports an emergency kitchen in Berestyn.
Emergency kitchens primarily prepare shelf-stable, high-calorie meals to provide swift and uncomplicated aid to emergency responders as well as the civilian population persevering in frontline settlements. Once prepared, the meals are vacuum-sealed and, when needed, transported directly to people sheltering in bunkers, basements, and forward protection zones.
In some cases, we hand over donated kitchen appliances, canned goods, and other in-kind donations from Germany directly to these kitchens. In most instances, however, it is far more cost-effective to provide aid as financial support. Local procurement is faster, eliminates high transport costs, and allows local partners on the ground to assess what is most urgently needed at any given moment.
Naturally, this form of support means we must—and want to—scrutinize how these funds are utilized even more rigorously. This is not driven by any lack of trust in our local partners, but rather by the duty of care and transparency we owe our donors and supporters. At the same time, this accountability ensures our resources are deployed as efficiently and effectively as possible.
Alongside regular on-site visits, written financial breakdowns provided by the operators offer valuable transparency and may also be insightful for external observers to see.
A standard proof-of-use statement like this illustrates clearly how "our" funds have contributed, and will continue to contribute, to establishing and operating such a vital facility.
